Media Evaluation 4

Question 4.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?

My media product firstly uses forms of the modern-day media technology by firstly the editing software available for me to use to produce our groups music video. I used Adobe Premiere Pro and Creative Cloud. Premiere Pro proved to work quick and easy. My skills from previous editing software, Final Cut Pro for example, were able to expand and develop. Another key element to construct our media products was using Adobe Photoshop, something we all used in our group. This was used for our ancillary texts. These were individual posters and digipak CD layouts for our created music artist, Vivid.

To construct our media texts, researching was pivotal. To research I used the likes of YouTube and Google to firstly watch real current music videos, then watch and analyse how they’re marketed through posters and CD covers and subsequently what type of music area we would be best suited to create an artist in. We chose Vivid to fit into the indie pop genre. Something the likes of Dua Lipa and Alice Wolf originated in. Both people crucial to our research, planning and construction. On YouTube as a group we watched videos from artist in this same genre to analyse their pace, star screen time, lip synching and overall performance as artists.

Question 3.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

From audience feedback I have personally learnt a lot. Firstly, the fact of it being so crucial in creating work such as a poster and music video. This feedback of opinions allowed both texts to develop, change and be more suited to our target genre and audience. Most of the audience in the rest of the class being in this demographic themselves so therefore extremely helpful.

For example, using feedback to adapt multiple things in our groups music video. As editor then the points resulting our videos first screening were mostly things I could achieve myself. One of these things was the pace of the editing and cuts. This was something I sped up, then secondly location changes regarding the "Bridge" - we re filmed and I included these new shots in the video.

Question 2.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Media Evaluation 1

Question 1.
In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?

My media texts firstly use current forms and conventions of real media products for a number of reasons. One of them being the fact that my group’s music video includes elements from real videos from artists. Hitting the first lyric was applied and also having a bridge in the music video. Hitting the first lyric is where the artist in the video is seen lip synching the first line(s) of the song. A bridge in a music video is when three quarters of the way through the setting, tone and the way it’s presented changes. In our music video, as editor myself, I made use that this happened. To do so, when the tone of the song changed three quarters of the way through I inserted clips of a whole new location, with completely different lighting to what it was earlier on in the video.
To develop real media text conventions in my own texts I included just two separate images on my digipak layout and with the rest used a background from one of those same images. I did this because the background in particular was spot on for what the artist represents and the type of genre she’ll be aiming to fit in. in contrast, I could have used separate images for all six different panels but instead decided to put an alternate view on the project. This element also makes the layout itself look more complete and makes the images chosen look as if they’re where they belong and not out of place.

To challenge current media texts, I have included multiple social media links within my ancillary poster task. This is something I believe challenges current conventions because music artists in the modern era are usually keen to include the bare minimal in their music videos, as a current trend, but this is something I thought Aaliyah A, a small time indie artist, releasing her first album wouldn’t be necessarily be interested in. instead, trying every trick in the ‘promoting book’ to get some extra publicity and fame. A poster therefore the perfect way to do this.

For additional information and concepts conventions:

Poster Completed

This is my completed poster and I am happy with the outcome of such work. I believe it withholds multiple conventions of music artists and posters in the industry. Both traditional, for example making the artists face the main image, and also modern, having multiple social media links and addresses in the poster for fans.

Digipak Completed

This is my finished digipak template for our artist. From my previous draft, feedback has been vital for improvements ive made. For example I decided to include a background behind the whole template itself and then my main chosen Vivid image for the album twice on the CD pack. Additionally, I was advised to include a copyright report and logo of our chosen record label company.

Poster draft feedback

Once showing my draft poster to the other two members in my group and also the subject teacher the main comments or improvements were as follows.

Firstly, it was thought the poster was too one colour driven and as 'Vivid' I should include more of a colour pallet to describe this. Also, after looking online and researching real posters, it was clear I needed to include a logo for our chosen record label company. Another addition to be made will be social media links to online marketing and feeds.

Poster Research

These posters above are good examples of conventional artist posters and show good examples of online links to websites for example, also the logo's for their designated record label companies are on show. Also obviously, the artist is the main image.

Album/Aritst idea change

Throughout our project so far, the idea behind all of it was to include 'VIVID' as the artists stage name and also what we would call the artist. But after using it on draft posters and the digipak we have decided to make alterations.

our new concept is to use the artists real name, Aaliyah A, as the main curtain over herself as an artist and then secondly, 'Vivid', as our name for her album and that only.

Filming

After watching back and working on our music video for some extra time I thought that the video had to include more staged shots, studio based, so that the video's emotions could be controlled.

By this I mean that throughout the video the emotional road the viewer is taken on whilst, "He doesn't love me" and "Am I ugly?" run through the song frequently, its clear it shouldn't technically be a happy, summery, 'in a park eating ice cream' kind of music video. Therefore, to keep an abstract and indie feel to the emotional rollercoaster the song takes you, some structure is key. My plan was to include these structural clips at the beginning and end, then throughout continuing the rollercoaster and leaving the audience asking questions.

These shots included ones, on set, in a dark room.

Digipak second shoot

This shot was filmed in a school drama studio. We chose to use this so that it had dark lighting to contrast on the digipak with the lighter shots. I estimate the darker ones will look better but possibly the more colourful ones will suit the genre and audience.

Storyboard/Narrative change

Our initial idea was to film scenes where later on in the music video we would reveal flashbacks of both the protagonist and her boyfriend together as part of a 'happier times' montage of clips. Also starting the video as sad facial expressions and moods from the main character.

Our plan is to now start the music video very happy and then later on, during the bridge, reveal the antagonist in 1 or 2 scenes and ending it sadly.

Filming Planning

Our first shoot was a very successful one and one in which mostly all of our shots and ideas worked very well once we watched them back and began to integrate them in our sequence. As editor of the group I noticed that some of the lip synching was out of time from our first in-door shoot using a studio. These are therefore shots we are interested in re-shooting.

The best shots from our shoot were the ones that were very colourful, involved exciting high energy performances and interesting location(s). All things we've noted for our next shoots.

First location shoot

Today, our group went to Soho London to shoot for our music video. To shoot we used and referenced our storyboard a lot of the time and found this very helpful. Our destination was central Soho but on the way we ended p finding unique appropriate locations and settings which we used to find alternative shots.

Below are some stills and photos from our day of shooting. Post shoot: I uploaded all of our appropriate footage to Adobe Premiere as main editor of the group and started to cut and edit the clips together and remove any out-takes when necessary.

Music Video Pitch

This is our pitch of a presentation we made on the whole of our music video and plan. It's about how we plan to make it, how and where we'll shoot, costume to be worn and also about our created artist. Vivid.

Filming Sequence Draft

This short clip is a part of our first filming shoot. Once the rest of our storyboard ideas are shot I will begin editing myself as the designated editor of the group. This shot amongst others was successful, none weren't.
